Introduction: Due to time constraints as regular individuals running Witching Buzz and focusing primarily on writing reviews, we are limited to publishing only one (occasionally two) review(s) per day. However, we strongly believe in providing greater exposure to deserving bands and musicians who have put in immense effort. As a result, we have launched a new section called “Witching Riffs: Behind the Sound.” In this section, we have crafted a series of intriguing questions that we pose to every band or musician who wishes to share more about their unique projects. While the questions remain the same for each participant, the diversity among bands ensures that the answers will be fascinating and diverse. What drew you to the immersive and hypnotic sounds? How do you aim to captivate your listeners with this genre?
We just love a heavy patient or meditative flow and a lot of atmosphere and feeling in music. And that it feels free. We create and play our music with love and with letting the music lead the way, we don’t really plan or think «let’s play this riff this way to hypnotise or transport people». We just go for a natural inspired flow and if people pick up on this feeling that is awesome.
Also, we don´t overcomplicate things. We feel that a simple musical skeleton or structure gives more room for the atmosphere and feeling we are after. And we of course think about playing with a vibe that is coherent to the lyrics.
Can you share the story behind your band name? How does it reflect the essence of your music?
We chose the name Superlynx because we wanted a link to nature in our band name. The lynx is both big, wild and fierce but also very shy and rare, and it has it´s name from the Latin word for light, “lvx” because of it´s super luminous eyes. We felt this was a very suitable reference to our music and lyrical themes.
What are some unconventional or unexpected influences that have shaped your unique blend?
We listen to a lot of different stuff, so that is really hard to say. It is probably just that, like a sum of everything we listen to and are influenced by.
How do you approach creating expansive and atmospheric soundscapes? What techniques or methods do you employ to achieve that signature vibe?
Again, simple, not complicating things, dive into a feeling, not stressing, and also being open to letting the music lead. We also jam a lot and see what happens naturally rather than writing and thinking everything out beforehand
Are there specific themes or emotions you seek to convey through your music? How do alternative music help you express those concepts effectively?
Our music and lyrics are very personal to us, and deal a lot with what we go through in life. Light, darkness, a strong connection to nature and the universe are also big parts of the songs as something existential, meditative and empowering.
While our previous albums explored very personal things this time we have focused more on themes like imagination, dreams, inspiration, connection and an open view.
Listening, playing and creating music in general is a huge part of our lives and how we deal with it. The most magical thing is the feeling of taking our struggles and fears and turn it into music that feels meaningful and full of love and light and that might even build connections to other people.
Share a remarkable moment or incident from your journey as a band that exemplifies the spirit of your music.
A few years ago we played a really small festival at a little farm with our extended family from the scene around Oslo. It took place in the woodlands of Southern Norway a few hours from Oslo, and the stage was surrounded by this beautiful forest. The drums were of the Hello Kitty kind of level and kept falling apart during our set, and the mic stand was a gaffed together wooden stick, but during our set the sky went from sunset to starlit sky, and there was such a heartwarming feeling of love and friendship between old and new friends that stuck in a really deep way. Our drummer Ole also had a relapse after an intense personal crisis at the time, and he was taken such good care of with love and appreciation by this community. The whole thing burned a lovely scar in our hearts.
In what ways do you envision your music progressing or evolving in the future? Are there any new elements or experimental approaches you’d like to incorporate?
Like always we will just let inspiration, new ideas and first of all the music itself lead the way. Right now we are focusing on the new album release and the upcoming gigs and then we’ll see what we feel like doing later on. We also just expanded from three to four band members with an extra guitarist and that feels quite new and experimental to us after 10 years as a trio. We are very happy with this decision so far.
Is there a particular song in your discography that perfectly encapsulates the essence of your music? Please elaborate on its creation and significance.
Maybe the song Electric Temple as it includes or different sides – it is both calm and meditative and energetic and intense, and it is about our love for music and the magic of music and the bridges it creates.
Are there any emerging or lesser-known artists within your music genre realm that you find inspiring or deserving of more recognition? Feel free to share their names and what you appreciate about their work.
We really love the Croatian band Stonebride´s album Summon the Waves from 2010.
Pia and Ole saw them by accident in Oslo many years ago and have listened so much to this album ever since. They just have so many cool elements and such an honest feeling in their music.
Sherpa is another band that we feel deserves more listeners. Especially their album Tigris and Euphrates is amazing. So calm and patient and meditative.
What do you hope listeners experience or feel when they immerse themselves in your compositions? Is there a specific mood or sensation you aim to evoke?
The aim is a personal journey and if someone else catches up on the same road it is amazing. We are just going wherever the love in a musical dimension takes us. And we hope they feel calm, light and love.
