Drive By Wire’s latest album, Time Horizon, is a fantastic trip through the world of psychedelic desert rock. This Dutch band, known for their heavy rock grooves and Simone’s dreamy vocals, has really outdone themselves with this one.
Formed in 2006 by Simone and guitarist Alwin in Deventer, Drive By Wire quickly caught the attention of rock fans everywhere. With Marcel on bass and Ingmar on drums, they create a powerful and impressive sound that’s both heavy and hypnotic.
Time Horizon was recorded in a secluded cabin in the woods, and you can feel that natural, raw vibe throughout the album. There are eight tracks here that blend 70s hard rock with modern psychedelia, creating a warm, fuzzy sound that’s incredibly inviting.
The album kicks off with “Northern Lights,” a track that immediately draws you in with deep, fuzzy riffs and Simone’s ethereal voice. It’s like being transported to a desert under a starry sky. The interplay between the guitar and the rhythm section is tight, creating a dense, immersive soundscape.
“Slowrider” keeps the journey going with heavy grooves and trippy melodies. Marcel and Ingmar’s rhythm section lays down a solid foundation, allowing Alwin’s guitar to soar and Simone’s vocals to captivate. The song builds up to a powerful climax, leaving you in a hypnotic state.
One of the highlights, “Dust Fader,” perfectly captures the essence of the band’s sound. It is a truly driving and storming sonic assault with catchy rhythms and a captivating atmosphere!
“Black Sails” is an epic journey blending heavy rock with psychedelic elements. The dynamic shifts and rich textures make it a standout on the album.
“Time Horizon” is a more introspective track, with spacey effects and a slower pace. Its dreamlike quality and intricate arrangements showcase the band’s versatility and emotional depth.
The album closes with ‘How Soon Is Now,’ a well-played cover of The Smiths!
I skipped some track titles as it is better for you to explore the entire album personally.
Time Horizon is a brilliant addition to Drive By Wire’s catalog. It captures the essence of their live performances and translates it into a powerful and intimate studio album. The band’s ability to create a sense of place and atmosphere with their music is exceptional, making this album a must-listen for fans of psychedelic desert rock.
If you’re looking for a journey through the sonic desert, this album is the perfect soundtrack.
